Invitation to march for peace globally

Dear Editor: Be one of the brave and help us to create a new, non-violent global consciousness. The power of one cannot be overstated. One million is merely a million ones. I recently heard of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence by accident, or was it magic or destiny? The fact remains I heard of it and now you have too. I am moved to act in whatever capacity at my disposal to promote the idea and the ideal to others, even to send a letter to the editor. I will try to be brief: The march will begin in New Zealand on October 2 (Gandhi’s birthday), and will travel around the world, ending in Argentina on January 2, 2010. A peace march around the world? Indeed. Many hands make light work, and many feet can cover vast distances. It seems to me a natural fit for Canadians to pitch in by walking the walk for peace and nonviolence in ...

Regarding the downtown revitalization project

Dear Editor: Regarding the downtown revitalization project. Dawson should not be allowed to do any work that exceeds the contracted price. Local people are quite capable of doing the work themselves. We have some underground piping for sewage which we would willingly supply to younger citizens capable of working. They could install it, and I am sure others have material they could contribute. We farmers have moss, leafy mold, manure and trees or shrubs for hedges. Since it is our town, and times are tough, and the environment needs our protection, we should follow the example of the students and make our town a thing of beauty. Something to be proud of. Margaret ...

How much will it cost?

Editor: According to our laws, Brian Mulroney didn’t do anything wrong so he must be feeling pretty happy, maybe even laughing up his sleeve. The court case went on for a long time. How much will that trial cost?   Margaret ...

Banning all snowmobile use on Crown lands in British Columbia

Editor: Following another recent newspaper article with regard to banning all snowmobile use on Crown lands in British Columbia; The Association of British Columbia Snowmobile Clubs felt it necessary to respond again to these current comments. Recreational snowmobilers have been accessing the backcountry of British Columbia over the past 45 years, and have been doing so in a very safe and responsible manner. When one considers the number of recreational snowmobilers in the backcountry on any given weekend as opposed to other users, the incident of injury and death associated with the sport is VERY low. That is not too suggest that any injury or death is acceptable, nor that some may not be avoidable, but it does suggest that most snowmobilers are very responsible when indulging in their sport and that these incidents are accidents which can be associated with any form of backcountry recreation. The British Columbia snowmobile community holds our right to recreate in the British Columbia backcountry as close to our ...

Everybody Loses. Even the ones who hold the reigns on power

Editor: The results of the election last week stunned me, showed me clearly and frightfully how we humans respond irrationally when we act on emotion, rather than upon fact.  Last week was not a time for voting based upon emotion. I doubt that the responsibility of exercising the vote ever was, and that rational thinking is called for in a functioning democracy.  But society is changing.  Such diminished attention spans today, distractions, and evidently, even shorter memories. Why does it bother me so much that we fed into the fear last week, into the fear of change, of innovation, of inclusion, and in such a BIG way. Parallels to the rise of Nazism in Germany might be something to explore another day, after the indigestion has passed.  Unfortunately, the defeat of the STV vote (which represented potential for a more inclusive, dynamic legislature, intelligent debates, injection of fresh ideas for economic growth, for stimulus in a recession, and improved governance) has ...

Gunfire in national news

With all this summery weather, and events going on every weekend like machine gun fire, I’ve been neglecting the national news. I took some time yesterday, while recovering from Valemountain Days, to peruse the headlines. Looks like I missed a lot. Another election? ...

Summer Good, Forest Fires bad

I think it’s safe to say summer is here. So far it seems like we have had more sun this year then we did all last summer. It’s nice for swimming and sunbathing, but bad if you don’t find forest fires a welcome part of the dry season in the BC woods. Over the last few years, I have had the distinct pleasure of getting to know many of the young men and women who come here to help protect our ...

I was all set to write an upbeat, optimistic editorial this week. Really, I was. The sunny summer weather has been glorious throughout the Valley, and people are happy about it. It’s hard to be pessimistic in the summer. It just seems like everything takes a deep breath and relaxes a bit, even though our lives seem to get busier as well with events almost every weekend. That’s why it was extra shocking, for me anyways, when I drove into town ...
